The first transportation company in Rio de Janeiro State to use biodiesel, the entire 1001 Fleet is currently powered by this type of fuel. Of the 3,000 buses running on this technology in Rio de Janeiro State, 700 are owned by 1001.
A clean-burning alternative fuel, biodiesel is made from plant oils, particularly those pressed from sunflower seeds, castor and soybeans, or babassu nuts. In addition to cutting costs, the use of biofuel proves the depth of the 1001 commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility. Through this approach, it avoids burning oil products that release large quantities of CO2 and step up global warming.
This clean fuel may be used neat (100% - B100) or in blends of 2% (B2), 5% (B5) and 20% (B20). At the moment, 1001 is using the 2% blend, but is already gearing up to introduce the B5 option. This upgrade will ensure the following reductions in pollutant emissions: 20% sulfur; 9.8% carbon anhydride; 14.2% unburned hydrocarbons; 26.8% particulate matter and 4.6% nitrogen oxide.
