Library Bus develops Taste for Reading

An itinerant library set up in a fully adapted bus, the 1001 Stories Project reaches out to students in the Government school network, offering a collection of more than 1,400 children's books and comics, in addition to educational videos. Its main purpose is to encourage these youngsters to read by offering them opportunities to come in contact with the written word.

This library bus has already traveled to more than 200 towns and taken part in several book biennials. Visited by some 600,000 children, together with their relatives and teachers in the areas serviced by the 1001 bus company, this initiative is building up closer links with local communities and institutions. Additionally, this innovative project was rated as a benchmark in the education area by the Good Corporate Citizenship Guide published by Exame magazine.

In order to ensure the feasibility of this Project, 1001 stays in close contact with Education Bureaus, NGOs and communities, which indicate the schools in their towns to be visited by this bus.

Alternatively, school visits may be scheduled directly with the 1001 Commercial Sector: (21) 2109-1001, extension 1090.

* Due to heavy demands for this Project, Government schools take priority. However, this library bus also attends events related to reading, childhood and adolescence.
